Hi all.

I'm a relative newbie (been on Fascinate for over a year, rooted once before with a friend's help). In the recent update from VZW I now have Froyo 2.2.2, with Kernel version 2.6.32.9 and Baseband Version S;i500.04 V.ED05.

Through the update, I lost my previous Super User access.

Can anyone tell me/provide an easy to follow, one click rooting approach? I am not super familiar with all the other terms (ODIN?) and other acronyms, so please be gentle.

I don't want to lose any app data, if possible.

Thanks!!

This should be pretty simple. You're only going to need a few things and this will have no effect on the data that is on your phone.

First you'll need Odin. It is an application you use to flash, or install things on your phone directly.
That can be found HERE

The next thing you'll need is CWM (Clockwork Mod Recovery). This replaces the stock recovery mode on your phone to allow you to install zip files from your SD card, as well as make backups, restore, clear caches, data, etc.
That can be found HERE

And finally, the Superuser + Busybox files needed for root access. This will be a zip file which you will install with CWM once we get that on there.
That can be found HERE

Ok, once you have all 3 files downloaded on your computer, leave Odin3_v1.3.exe and the CWM3_Voodoo.md5.tar files somewhere you can find them, and put Busybox+SU-Edify.zip on your phone's SD card.

Now you're going to install CWM on your phone. To do this, power your phone off and remove it's battery. Next plug your USB cord from your computer into your phone. Then hold the volume down button on the phone until you see a big yellow triangle and "Download" appear. This is the mode you put your phone in to use Odin.

Now that you're phone is in download mode, launch the Odin file on your computer. You'll notice a row of 8 white boxes at the top, and 8 smaller white boxes blow that in the ID:COM section of Odin. One of the smaller boxes should be yellow and say COM with a number. This shows that Odin has made a connection to your phone in Download mode.

Next, click the PDA button in Odin. DO NOT USE ANY OTHER BUTTONS! This will pop up a window where you can browse to the CWM3_Voodoo.md5.tar file on your computer. Once you select it with Odin, hit Start.

It should only take about a minute or less you'll see the Message section of Odin displaying its progress along the way. Once it is complete, your phone will go black and Odin will say PASS in a green box at the top. From here you can close Odin and unplug your phone from USB.

Now you're going to boot into the CWM recovery you just flashed. Reinsert your battery, then hold the Volume +, Volume -, and Power keys all together on your phone until you see the Samsung logo. Once that appears, you may release the keys while it loads.

Once in recovery, you will see many options in red text. To navigate here, you use the volume rocker to go up and down, and the power button to select. Go down to "install zip from sdcard" and select it. Next, go down again to "choose zip from sdcard" and select that. From here, you need to navigate to the Busybox+SU-Edify.zip you put on your SD card in the beginning. If you just put it on the root of the card (not in a folder) it should be at the bottom of the list.

When you select it you will be taken to a confirmation page with many no options, and one yes. Scroll to the yes and select it. This will start the installation of the root required files. Once it is complete, scroll to the bottom of the list you see to Go Back until you're at the main menu of CWM. This first option in the main menu is "reboot system now". Select that and your phone will start up. Once it is loaded, you should now see a Superuser icon in your app drawer and have the ability to give apps that require it root access.

Congratulations. You are now rooted and know how to use Odin and CWM for the future.

THANKS!!!! This looks awesome and very straight forward.

My only questions right now are:

- Will this change the look and feel of what came on the phone?
- Will I lose and application data? The first thing that comes to mind is Angry Birds scores. (sorry, I'm addicted) or other info (card numbers, password, etc.)?

At this point, I'm not worried about getting a new "skin" (if that is the right name), but may be in the near future. I like the look and feel that came on the phone, but would love to be able to delete bloatware and increase battery life.

Thoughts???

Thanks again!

Killahamsammich (LOVE THE NAME!!!)

I have a couple follow up questions I posted. Can you please let me know your thoughts on these?

Also - you are certain this will work on the Froyo and Kernel version I have?

Thanks!!!

Installing CWM and rooting does not affect your Rom, Kernel or Data partitions. Since you are concerned about your data, you should get a good backup program as well. The two most popular seems to be MyBackup Pro and Titanium.

Is there a newer su+ busybox zip that works with CWM3? The one I have is Amend scripted.

@swmhancock. Sorry to leave you hanging there. haven't checked in in a while. to answer your questions simply, no. Any steps I gave in my instructions will not change anything with the phone aside from adding the Superuser icon to your app drawer. It works with all kernel and ROM versions as well so there is no need to worry about compatibility. All of your data will still be the same, along with the ROM and theme still being intact as well.

@atomD21. Yes, the superuser + busybox zip I linked to in the OP is and edify scripted to work with CWM3.

Please stop spamming the forums with the same post. It actually makes you less likely to get an answer. Have you tried dialing *228 and choosing option 1? After that also do it again and choose option 2. Are you able to connect to a wifi network? What signal levels do you currently have? We need a little more information to help you along.

I had the same issue with losing the 3G data. I would still show that I was at least 3 bars on signal strength and that my card was active. I called *228 as suggested and did option 1. That did not work even after it said that my phone was successfully programmed. After I called the second time and went with option 2 my phone is still without 3G service.. Any suggestions?

I finally had the kahunas to give it a try (with my friend's help again).
I'm ROOTED successfully. I can't thank you enough.
Someday I may even try a diff ROM so I can get rid of the bloatware.

If you have sugestions - please don't be bashful.

Easy of use, speed, and battery life are my main interests (of course, I don;t want to lose my Angry Birds data!).

UPDATE -

I rooted successfully, but now I have no data (3G) from Verizon.
Any suggestions?

Verizon wants me to hard reset. I really don't want to go that route if possible.

HELP???

A couple easy "fixes" first to see whats going on.

1. Pull battery.......not just turning phone on and off.
2. If that doesn't work, go into recovery (the same method you used to get SuperUser...both volumes and power button at the same time. When you get to recovery, clear cache. And then go to advance and clear Dalvik cache. Then hit menu key to get back to first recovery screen. Then reboot phone.

Let us know if either of those worked for you. Battery pull should do it.

If those don't work, we'll take you to the next level and get a custom Rom.

Edit: Forget the "advance" part of #2.....I realized you are just rooted and don't have a newer recovery. Still, try the clear cache in recovery then reboot.

I When I tried to get into recovery mode, I cuold only get into a Manual Mode. I cleared the cache, but not the data/factory reset. I then rebooted. No change. Still not internet.

I can't seem to get into regular recovery mode now.

Help????

I just rooted my phone and followed the directions above. I have no data access now. While on cell coverage calling and txt works but I have no data access in any apps such as web browser. When I switch to WiFi in my home, it constantly says Obtaining IP address and never gives me data access. I have 4 bars signal. Funny thing is that in cell mode, the connection icon looks like a Wifi icon. No 3G
Firm 2.2.2, kernel 2.6.32.9, ED05.
It all worked an hour ago.
Thanks
