I initially had a :

CDMA HTC Evo 3d,
S-OFF using juopunutbear's wire trick
Rooted using HTC Dev Unlock method
HBoot 1.58
2.89.561.2 ICS stock kernel and rom

I then was going to try and run a RUU so that I could decrease the hboot, and so ran the command:

fastboot oem lock.

However, like an *****, I also ran right afterwards:
fastboot oem writesecureflag 3

So now I have S-OFF and am unable to run any RUU's as it says the error: 170: usb connection error. My usb cable works just fine and trying to run a ruu the manual way:
fastboot oem rebootRUU
fastboot flash zip PG58IMG.zip

and here I get the error:
FAILED (remote: 12 signature verify fail).

I've tried to do the wire trick again to get S-OFF but i get the message: is bar closed? it doesn't ask for super user privileges and just closes.

Please help! :(

Well first when your s-off there is no need to use htcdev unlock. when you ran the cmd writesecureflag 3 it should have relocked the bootloader and now be s-on. Do you have the PG86IMG.zip in the folder with fastboot ? I do notice you have PG58IMG. For future reference you dont need to run a RUU to change your hboot.

Yes, i did have the PG86IMG.zip folder in fastboot. I was just using those commands for the PG58IMG because it broke down each of the commands that the RUU performs and I figured it'd be the same, giving me an error exactly where it was failing and providing a reason for the failure.

Also, I'm pretty sure that you have to relock before running a RUU as I had tried without relocking and it didn't even recognize the PG86IMG.zip file... So you do need the HTC Dev Unlock method when relocking in that respect...

Finally, I realize that you do not absolutely need an RUU to downgrade the hboot, but my problem right now is that I cannot even run an RUU for some reason, nor can I get back to my S-OFF status.. :(

But thank you for trying to help anyway!

Also, how would you change the hboot? Haven't really found a really good explanation anywhere and so I would like to know! :)

thanks!

actually I've looked at some of your other posts that have led to some things I haven't tried. I'll try them and write here again if it still doesn't work. But I find it strange that I can't flash a RUU. The bootloader recognizes the PG86IMG.zip file, says "Loading" or Scanning as the blue bar finishes. Then says Loading or something else as the brown bar finishes as well. But then instead of asking if I want to flash the RUU, it just takes me back to the bootloader menu...

So here's the thing:

if I'm in the bootloader in fastboot usb mode, then no, it does not go to a black screen with the htc logo on it.
I've tried to run the RUU when the phone is completely loaded in sense and everything. If I run the 2.89 RUU at this point, it will restart the phone automatically and send it into that black screen with the htc logo on it and say the USB 170 error.
I'm currently on the 2.89 firmware and am using the 2.89 RUU so I think it should work? If I try to use the 2.17 RUU then I get that error where it says that my installed firmware is too high.

another thing I noticed is that when I do : fastboot oem lock
I get an error stating: Failed! Too many links!
If I could just get the RUU to work and get past this 170 error I know I can get the phone into the state I want it to be in.. should have never typed in fastboot writesecureflag 3

But I'll check out UnknownForce's thread.
Thanks for the quick reply!

Now that you are s-on you cant use a RUU that the firmware is older than what you are on. you need a new firmware so maybe thats your problem
When you type fastboot oem rebootRUU is it rebooting to a black screen with the HTC icon on it
