help with battery drain on das bamf 1.6.3

As for kernels, you can try the battery-saver variety of imoseyon's, or really any froyo-sense kernels. Some might work well with your phone, others might drain battery at a similar rate to what you have now (i assume it's the bamf 447 kernel that you are using). Additionally, you can change your min/max frequency settings in the bamf toolkit to try to save on battery.

Kernels are flashed in clockwork mod recovery after you clear cache partition and dalvik cache, but do not wipe data for kernels.

So let me clarify:
1). I have BAMF 1.6.3 ROM with kernel 2.6.32.21_bamf_4.4.7 - I can install any kernels to this ROM, even non-BAMF kernel. Is this correct?

2). Assuming #1 is true, that means I can flash a new kernel without causing data loss and I don't have to re-install / restore all apps and data.. I.e. If I install new ROM, I had to "wipe data", but with kernel I don't.

3). When you said "Kernels are flash in [CWM]...", do you mean selecting the "Install zip from SD card" in CWM, same like when installing ROM?

4). Where do you get the kernel-only files? I see ROMs and ROMS...

1 you can install any froyo sense kernel available for thunderbolt currently, to go with das bamf froyo roms. most of the kernels available now are of this variety, but make sure you dont flash an aosp oriented kernel instead.

2 when you flash a kernel you do not need to wipe data, but you can clear cache and dalvik (i always do).

3 yes you boot into recovery mode, clear caches, install zip from sd, choose zip from sd, find kernel file and flash.

Uh oh.. I just did a boo-boo. I installed the leankernel WITHOUT deleting the cache or dalvik. As soon as I realized that, while still in CWM, I cleaned the cache, dalvik and battery stats and THEN re-install the leankernel.

The phone boots just fine and the leankernel was installed (checked Settings -> About) ...but do you think I messed up something inside?

No thats okay

Quick questions guys:

I just installed BAMF 1.7 Remix with the included Kernel. I have NOT SETUP ANYTHING other than the default Google account for Market place, which by default also setup Mail, Calendar, contacts, etc. I installed only one app: Battery Monitor Widget. So far, it's showing the phone is using 40-150 mA averaging at 100mA.

Compared to my friend Droid Charge, which is stock, it's using only 20mA. He rooted the phone and installed custom ROM and the Charge is now using only 4-10 mA.

What exactly is using that much battery in Thunderbolt? Keep in mind this is running NO APPS and nothing installed, other than what I stated the above.

Well if you just installed the ROM I would give it some time to adjust. Also when you install a new ROM you need to charge to full, then wipe battery stats to calibrate properly.

What radio do you have? Have you tried experimenting with different combinations? What's your signal quality like? 3G/4G strong/weak? You can also experiment with different governors with your current kernel or If it doesn't improve I would try Imoseyon's lean kernel set to Battsaver.

I'm assuming that you know the proper way to flash using recovery (cwm) only for ROMS/Kernels. Also be sure to wipe minimally two times data/caches, and don't restore any kind of system data to a new ROM either.

If none of this helps, it may be that your battery is defective if you continue to get those kinds of readings.

I have tried a lot of things, as shown in my previous post above: change battery through Verizon store, install different ROM and Kernel, etc.

I did all the wipe, including battery when the phone is fully charged. Signal quality is great at my place. That's why I gave an example of my friend Droid's charge: right off the bat from the custom ROM, he got low usage, 4-10mA.

So I am curious: why in a FRESHLY INSTALLED ROM, the TB is already consuming battery life at such a HIGH RATE (100mA) with NOTHING installed.

You mentioned about minimally wipe data/caches twice. Is there a known issue with TB such that not doing this will cause all sort of problem? Reading all the threads for various ROMS (BAMF, debloat, etc..etc.), for the last 1 hour, NOTHING from XDA Developer mentioned about wiping data/cache multiple times before installing any new ROM.

Well take it from someone who's a flashaholic, I always wipe multiple times and have never run into problems. I'm not saying that if you don't do it you'll have issues, but taking a few extra seconds to do so is hardly a nuisance. It's worth the peace of mind alone that everything is wiped clean and no remnants are leftover.

Striders there will be a significant update soon for BAMF 2.0. I would try that out for a while if things don't improve with your current setup. There is a very small chance of a 'bootlooping brick' with the leaked Gingerbread radios but nothing to be really worried about.

Do you need to WIPE multiple times BEFORE flashing the new ROM for this..

Or...

Can I just wipe cache and dalvik multiple times WITHOUT re-installing the new ROM? I just install the new ROM and haven't been adding anything other than the Battery Widget Pro...

I have thought of that, but the brick issue got me scared. I will try that maybe in a couple of weeks, since I am travelling this weekend and need my phone.

All right, I just did this 10 TIMES EACH:
- Wipe Data / Reset
- Wipe Cache
- Wipe Dalvik
- Wipe Battery Stats

If my phone still show it USED 100mA Average (peak at 650mA!!) after all this multiple-wiping-fun effort, then I think it's just bad phone design. I.e. Hardware, ROM (even custom ROM came from leaked HTC official ROM, right?).

Overkill on the wipe? Well, I am TIRED of not having been able to use the phone for more than 5 hours / day with light-moderate use. I have a business to run and I cannot worry about phone battery every day. No matter what ROM I install (tried 3 ROM and 2 kernel so far), if the ROM design (from HTC, modded by XDA) uses 100mA straight from the box, then the battery will max out at 5 hours. Unless I turned off GPS, 4G, background email push..etc..etc.. But then what's the point of having the phone then?

FYI, I have an iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 before and with the same normal usage I use with my Thunderbolt, the phone can last 12 hours with about 20% left. Not to be an Apple fan-boy, but just to emphasis that I NEED a phone that works.
