So I have my phone rooted. I downloaded the OverClock Widget and its working so I guess that means my phone is rooted.

I'm at the point where I need to flash my phone before I can install a custom ROM. But I cant find a flash recovery image that is compatible with my Sprint HTC Hero.

Where might I find a flash recovery image that is compatible?

That was amazing!!

Perfect instructions. Worked flawlessly. Thanks!!!

So one more question...might there be a similar "how-to" on getting the DamageControl ROM onto my Hero? :D

Piece of cake.

1. Download Titanium Backup (root) from the Market. It's free.
2. Run it and back up any app that has a lot of settings (Google voice, Twitter client, etc).
3. Download the DamageControl ROM and put it on your SD card.
4. Reboot your phone into recovery.
5. Make sure you have a Nandroid backup of your current system.
6. Navigate through the menu in recovery, and choose to wipe data/factory reset.
7. In the Nandroid menu again, select to flash an image from the SD card. Choose the damage control ROM.
8. When done reboot.

The first boot is going to take a while (they always do when you flash a new ROM)

I also always recommend rebooting a second time when you switch versions (from 1.5 to 2.1) before you set the phone back up.

After you get everything signed in through Google, open Gtalk. You can close it, just have to make sure it;s running. Then hit the market and look at your downloads. Everything will be there to re-download, and you can use the Titanium backup to restore the settings.

Good luck!

Thanks so much man!!!

I did it and I love it!!!

Now I'm researching the endless possibilities I have with my newly rooted device, lol. I'm particularly focusing on this Appstosd notion...but I've already noticed an increase in speed on my Hero. But it sounds like this will make it even quicker!!

After rooting and attempting to run Titanium Backup it says it cannot get root access. Is there a way to verify if my phone is rooted? I followed your excellent root guide and didn't run into any problems during the process...

EDIT: just loaded up the Terminal Emulator and got root access just fine. Must be a problem with the current version of Titanium Backup or something. Anyone have any suggestions for an alternative?

If you were able to flash the recovery image, you're rooted.

Does ti backup quit after it tells you you're not rooted? Or can you try anyway?

Doesn't look like it'll work. The error message says I need to make sure I have Busybox as well. Perhaps that's what I'm missing?

EDIT: Just went through some troubleshooting on the Titanium Backup website according to these steps my phone isn't properly rooted:

su
whoami
You must see "root" or "whoami: unknown uid 0". If you see something different, your phone is not properly rooted.

The message I receive is "not found".

Gbhil-

Thank you very much for this how to. I'd even like to recommend that the mods/admins make it a sticky. I struggled through three different how to's on XDA to get my Hero up to the new DamageControl 2.1 ROM and thankfully you had posted this here. And I'd like to think that I would be more than capable as a network engineer who has a touch of a background in systems, and some dabling on linux...

Just a little follow up to my previous posts. I wasn't able to get Titanium Backup working with the stock Sprint Hero ROM. I quick google search seems to indicate that I may not be the only one. I went ahead and bit the bullet and flashed to Gumbo 1.5c without a backup. A little bit of work, but worth it in the end. I'm finding that Titanium Backup works perfectly with the Gumbo ROM :)

Anyway, thanks for all the help and the fantastic ROM Gbhil!

Sorry I wasn't more help alan7467. Must have missed your post. Glad you got it all sorted in the end though.

And thanks GolpherZX :)
