Last night, I rooted my phone. I wanted to get into installing ROMs so I decided to test one out. I went with TrulyEpic and started the install process through ROM manager. I went into recovery yada yada and got the install started. Midway through, the screen went blank with a battery in the middle with the little spinning disk in the middle (except not spinning). Battery died? I didn't think so. I started the process with a good bit of battery and had my phone charging in the computer the entire time. I unplugged it from the computer and into the wall. Same thing. I let it charge for a while, but it still kept that screen with the battery. I unplugged it, took out battery/put it back in, and went into recovery (volume down, camera, power). I get the Samsung startup screen and then it goes to ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.1.0. There is also a "E:Can't open /cache/recovery/log" error at bottom. Here's my options and their results:

-reboot system now: recycles back to ClockworkMod
-apply sdcard:update.zip: goes to ClockworkMod Recovery v3.0.2.4
-wipe data/factory reset: data wipe complete with "E:Can't open /cache/recovery/log" error at bottom
-wipe cache partition: complete with same error
-install zip from SD: update.zip gets ClockworkMod screen with a bunch of the "Can't open" errors, TrulyEpic zip completes, everything successful, but goes back to ClockworkMod
-backup/restore: i had backup, tried to restore. stuck at lost+found at bottom aftereverything complete. left overnight. nothing.
-mounts and storage: can mount/unmount and format everything
-advanced: idk what all that does

Someone else in a different forum said it seems like the flash just failed. Well what do I do? Thanks

Yeah, ROM manager is likely the problem. Odin back to stock as per the video, then start over without ROMmanager. It is horribly broken on the Epic.

First, stay away from ROM Manager.

Second. I would honestly use Odin to return to stock Eclair/Froyo EB13 whichever you like and start over.
[How to] Factory Restore (or Fix a Bricked Phone) Procedure #1 is Froyo EB13, Procedure #2 is Eclair 2.1 (DI18)

CWM 2.5.1.0 which you were booting into doesn't support any of the newer and even older ROMs out there. Basically CWM 2.5.1.0 is for those who want root to do simple things like remove bloatware, use wireless tethering and make use of backup programs like Titanium Backup or Mybackup Root. Most ROM since about mid December were done supporting EXT4 filesystem/CWM 3.0.0.5.

I would sit down, decide which ROM you would like to run and go from there as far as what you need to do. TrulyEpic was built on the leaked version of DK28 Froyo which is fine but not many people are running it anymore and you will not find very much support for it anymore in any of the forums.

Any further questions regarding rooting and custom ROMs please post them in the appropriate threads in the section below.

Plus you have the link in my signature which will help answer many questions you may have, but rule #1 as of now NO ROM MANAGER.

Thanks very much all of you!! I have recently upgraded from the Optimus S and have spent hours loading everything, customizing everything, you know the whole deal. I went with Odin in assisting me getting my phone back to stock, but, despite what you have all said, I had to go back into to try and restore my backup. No luck. I was able to get out of ClockworkMod and will never touch it again, but is there any way to restore my phone without it?

You misunerstood, there is nothing wrong with clockworkmod, that is the basic building block of flashing roms. In fact, you should be using cwm and NOT rom manager.

I'd pick a more up to date and maintained rom than TER. At least choose something with EC05. I like ACS and bonsai, but hear good stuff about midnight and viper as well.

You can start with odin, or you migvht get away with flashing from cwm. Make you install cwm 3 first before you try anything that requires ext4.

There is no problem with CWM itself, but using ROM Manager is the problem. Rom Manager and its options are simply put "broken" for use on the Epic 4g at this time. So until you hear differently I would just stay away from using it.

CWM is needed to do everything with custom ROMs. Your problems all basically came from use of Rom Manager, now that you know this and to stay away from it next time around it should be much better.

Here are two more helpful links depending on which version of Froyo you are running... I will exclude DK28 because its unofficial and basically outdated/not used anymore.

(Below is for Froyo EC05)
[Root] Samsung Epic 4G Official Froyo EC05 w/Optional EXT4 - Updated 4/1

(Below is for Froyo EB13)
[Root] Samsung Epic 4G Official Froyo EB13 w/Optional EXT4

Both use the same programs to do the same thing, but a few of the steps are a bit different to achieve the final outcome.
