I am new to android and just got my EVO a couple of days ago. I am trying to root my phone, but keep running into road blocks. I have tried unrevoked, and it appears to start to work, but doesn't root my phone. Can't figure out what is wrong. I then try to do the manual steps, but when I download all the files I keep getting a broken link for the evo-root.zip file.

I would actually prefer to do the manual steps so that I have a better understanding of rooting. I have a linux background so these steps do not scare me. But I need to be able to get all the files.

Can anyone help me out, I am getting flustered.

Thanks

Which Method are you Following?

LJ's ROOT Return to 2.1 Sticky is good stuff

From there you need to see what HBoot you have and such

I tried liquidjesus' [How to] Rooting HTC EVO Froyo 2.2 (Windows).

That is the one that I can not download the evo-root.zip file. Are you referring to a different post?

How do I tell which hboot I have?

I am open to any process that works. Just point me in the right direction.

Power down the phone then power up holding the volume down and power button at the same time

Hold until you see a white screen with info and some Androids Skateboarding

By the way. The EVO is an awesome phone and I can't wait to root it to make it that much better. I want to root so that I can use roam control. That will make life with the EVO great.

I recommend MYN or Vael as a Daily Rom

MYN is a Sense Rom Like Stock but its Themed and just AWESOME

Vael is Equally as Awesome but Sense-less so its not the same sorta thing you're used to

Both are very good and tons of support here for the Roms

Another question. If I do the root and go back to 2.1, once I am rooted can I upgrade again to 2.2? If I understand it correctly then I should be able to correct? The rooting shouldn't affect any updates. I really want to be on 2.2 Froyo.

Once you're back down to 2.1 you can Follow any of the Rooting Methods to Attain full root

From there you can Flash a 2.2 Rooted Rom and you're good to go

Hi Scotty, did you get a good link to evo-root.zip or the unrevoked-forever.zip files? I have been going crazy and can't seem to find another file server that contains them.

Which Forum do you guys come from?

If you need me to Host the Files for some time I can

I have the following files

Update.zip
PC36IMG.zip
Flash_Image.zip
mtd-eng.zip

Also if needed I have the Evo-Recovery tool

Basically it loads the Files I have Listed Above for you *I dont Recommend it if you know what you're doing already*

Let me know If those are the ones you need

question. why would you want to force roaming? or is that just so you never lose signal? or are you trying to get out of a contract :)

if unrevoked is not working, make sure htc sync is uninstalled if it is installed....

my friend had this issue and couldnt figure out why it wouldnt work right...

once he uninstalled htc sync it worked perfect.

make sure the drivers are correct as well, make sure u are using the special unrevoked drivers from they're website.

You know when you're in an area that has a poor network signal (like 1 bar) and then your phone goes into roaming mode and now you have a full 5-bar signal (most likely using Verizon towers) that is much quicker. Well, roam control forcefully does this for you in those fringe areas. No more dropped calls!
