Help with 'Running' apps

I am never sure on what apps I can safely stop from running. Can anyone tell me which of these can be closed without affecting the necessary phone functions? (Some of these, like Google Goggles & Maps, re-start on their own.)

Depends how you use your phone. Google Goggles is safe, S Suggest is safe, Video Player is safe and Sprint Connection Optimizer is safe. Do you use Google Voice... if not.. close it. I hope I was a little help to you.

Are you asking about stopping the running program, or are you talking about disabling the program so it never runs?

If the first, don't worry about it. Let Android manage memory and apps. It does it just fine. Contrary to popular opinion, there's no advantage, in terms of battery life, performance, or any thing else to having "empty" memory.

If the second, it depends a lot on what you use your phone for, and which carrier you're on. If this is what you want, let me know and I can probably point you to some other threads on the subject.

I guess a little of both. But if it really doesn't affect the phone's performance and/or battery life, I probably shouldn't be too concerned. That was my reason for posting the question...

Android abhors a (memory) vacuum. It keeps recently used apps in memory so that if you need to go back to that app it's ready, and in the state you left it. Killing apps frequently can actually make your battery life worse, since Android will have to copy it from ROM to RAM every time you go to use it.

What will make a big difference in battery life is making sure your apps that do background data sync no more often than necessary. If Facebook, twitter and the like are syncing every 15 minutes, that will use a lot more battery than if they sync only hourly, or only manually. And Android has several options for having the phone keep track of where you are and notifying various services of your location. Those eat up a lot of battery, too. There are a number of battery tip threads floating around. One of these days I'm going to try to consolidate them and make a sticky, but for now you'll have to look for them.

Thanks - a helpful explanation. I'll start looking around here for ways to tweak things and hopefully squeeze some more juice out of the phone.
