Coming from a Dinc, not a newb, but.....

Why does my screen brightness keep doing what it wants?? I have it set to about 10% (because battery life sucks), and non-systematically it will just be brighter later in the day. I'll go back in settings>display>brightness, and it will show the meter exactly where it's supposed to be, but when I touch it exactly where it's at, then the screen dims back to how it is supposed to be to begin with. THis is extremely frustrating, and I don't know why it is doing it.
Similarly, the box for "Stay awake" continuously keeps checking itself, though I've uncheccked it 100 times.

Anyone have any ideas??

Strange. In all honesty, unless your screen stays on all day long, I'd set brightness to auto and forget about it. I would however, set your screen timeout to 30 sec or 1 min max.

Other thing you could try is to add the "power control" widget to an available screen. Make sure the display icon on far right (A) is not indicated ON via a green bar at the bottom of it. This is an alternate method to enable/disable auto brightness.

I used to do that as well but now I have auto brightness and even with heavy usage, I still get about 6-8 hours with the extended battery but I rarely use it that much. On a normal day, I make about 20 minutes of phone calls, 200 sms, about 30 minutes on the web, 10-20 minutes of songs and maybe facebook about 30 minutes and it last me all day 12-14 hours.

I have the Extended Control customized widgets, one of which is screen brightness. This one I keep on my main home screen in the lower right corner so I can change the brightness in the sunlight -- when I can't see the normal 10-12% minimum brightness. Saves battery life, yet allows me to turn up the brightness instantly without having to search through screens and widgets.

I do the same thing with Quick Settings but I have noticed what shaundiesel is taking about. Weird how it just slides up somehow, killing battery life. Oh well.

Thanks everyone, but that doesn't necessarily solve my issue. I already use extended controls as well, but my issue is with my X doing whatever it wants, rather than what I tell it to do.

I know its a smartphone, but it can't be smarter than me! Unacceptable! :-)

I use Power Widget and it works well for me, by chance what do you have Battery Manager set on? Also on the Always on option, you can disable debugging and this will disable this option also.

This happened to me once too! My Dx decided to stay lit up for 6 hours while I was sleeping, when i woke up it was at like 10% from 60% when I went to bed. O.o

I fixed it though by just restarting the phone, after i did that it went away.

Are you sure it isn't one of your power control widgets mucking with the setting?
Try uninstalling them and see if the problem persists.
If not and you are rooted make a nandroid backup and boot a fresh stock ROM and see if it is an X issue. If there is no problem it has to be an app, widget, or corrupt system settings causing the problem.

I've had time where my auto brightness wouldn't work properly and rebooting takes care of it.

Wow... that sounds annoying...

Is the phone stock?

The reason I ask is if the phone is rooted something may be corrupted somewhere. If you arent rooted i suggest first getting rid of every control widget you have downloaded and may be still on the device. If that doesnt solve the issue, a factory reset may be the only option to fix this.

Now if the factory reset doesn't work, i would say it is a hardware issue and the device should be replaced.

I've noticed this on my D2 and my DX, but only after the initial reboot. I turn the screen off/on and it's back to normal.
