Help with sleep function...

I'm having an issue with the sleep function. The screen will turn on and work great... When I press the sleep button it goes off when I press it again or press the home button the screen stays dark but the touch and everything comes on and works... I leave it for five minutes and the screen comes on fine? But does the same thing when I sleep it again...???!!!

How long inbetween these presses of the power button? Sometimes if I press it to many times in a row this will happen. I just press it, let it get into standby and then wake it back up.
