Help with USB PC Connection options

On my G2 when I connect via USB there are 4 options. One of them is internet connection. I was just wondering if anyone could explain to me how this internet connection works. I am trying to cut down on my data usage a little. I'm new to the forum so if this has been answered please direct me to the answer, if not any info greatly appreciated.

I believe you would choose that option of you were connecting your phone to a laptop or other device via USB for the purpose of tethering.That is, using the phones internet on the device.

I would recommend you use Wi-Fi as much as possible to cut down on data usage.
