Hello everyone. I want to thank all of the nice, helpful people that assist on these forums. Unfortunately, I have an issue w/ my fiance's Sprint Hero in trying to root. I have tried the z4root(failed to install on Hero), unrevoked forever (doesn't support it now), and there was one more that I can't quite remember, but I deleted it bc of compatibility issues.

I am wondering how I can root this phone, or if there is something i may be missing. I have rooted my Evo Shift, thanks to xda and this site, Thank you very much by the way! It was easy compared to all the roadblocks I am coming to with the Hero. At this point i am thinking that Sprint has updated so as to patch the exploit that allowed it to be rooted?

If that is the case, how do I get around that? Is there any way to root this phone now? Is it too late in the phone's life cycle to be paid attention to now? Please, if u can, help us out a lil? Thanks!:)

What is the software version? 1.5? 2.1? If you are on 1.5 you may need to upgrade the OS with the RUU to 2.1. The 2.1 RUU and alternative root method can be found here:http://forum.androidcentral.com/htc...6118-how-root-your-sprint-hero-one-click.html

The recovery is old but can be updated once you have root access by using ROM Manager.

I tried clicking on the link and for some reason it is broken. Use the search function and look for "How To Root your Sprint Hero (One-Click)" by Beezy.

Thank you for getting back so quick. I am dwnlding the RUU as I type this. After the update I will retry the method described by Beezy. I kinda thought it had to do with the phone software. Will let you know as soon as I can, thanks again!

No problem. Remember, the RUU needs to be run from a PC. There is a flashable .zip on XDA that I will post if you need it. Make sure the HTC Sync drivers are installed and run the RUU.

Z4 Root should work once you RUU. Either way, let us know the end result :)

You guys are spot on! I installed heroRoot010.apk instead of z4, but either way her phone is now rooted. I didn't reboot to check for S-OFF, but the superuserPermission is in the apps menu.

Thing is though, now Google Appstore won't work. I tried to re-install it with a random gapps file I had on my desktop, needless to say it did not work! I am not sure how to install it?

Should I just forget about it and install cyanomodogen (sic) 7, then flash gapps? Getting a good overclocking rom on her phone is my basic goal for the moment. She has left for work though, so anymore tweaking will have to wait until later tonight.

Thanks for the help! I was thinking about trying it myself, but you made it clear as day in a hazy mind! If you have any other suggestions I would be glad to give a listen!:D

CM7 is a good ROM - I've been using it for some time now. The most recent gapps file can be downloaded from the CM7 HeroC or XDA forums. They should be flashed through recovery in the .zip format.

Hope she likes the phone :)

Thanks for all the help! I am having her dwnld cm7 through rom manager now. I can't seem to get my laptop to download anything in its complete form from xda. Yesterday I was trying to dwnld a nightly that was like 82 mb and it only did like 7mb, then 14, then 34, then 6, then to top it all off 81.5mb. It took an hour to dwnld that and it didn't even finish.

Rom manager is the only way I have been able to get CM7 to sum it up I guess. Have you heard of the same thing happening to anyone else? Maybe they tagged my IP as a NOOB and just want to mess with me? Haha, is that being too paranoid? I really appreciate the help and advice. I think I have found my new hobby through these roots, and roms. I am an IT, but really didn't know the extent of the android community until I tried it.

Guess I am a little bit late to the party, but oh well, better late than never!

Have you tried another browser? Try Chrome or Firefox and see if that does any better. It should download just fine unless your IP is holding things up.

I would suggest upgrading the recovery if you havn't done so already. This can be done through ROM Manager as well - it will download Clockwork mod recovery. She will may (and I say may because some people say it's not needed) need it to flash CM7.

Make sure she makes a backup of the phone before flashing. This can be done through the recovery as Nandroid. She will need to wipe/factory reset and wipe dalvik cache before flashing the ROM.

Cwm recovery needed to flash cm7? Since when? I flashed it just fine with RA 1.7. :)

Guided her through the simple process and she is crazy excited about her phone not lagging. She can use her laptop at work now via wireless hotspot. CM7 is the best thing to happen to android since God dished out HTC phones via lightning bolts.

I though people were having problems flashing early 2.3 builds with Amon_RA, myself included. This was in December though, before the source was released and early builds started to trickle out. Might have been a case by case issue because I for sure had a problem flashing the 2.3 ROM with an endless boot loop.

Since I prefer Amon, I will give it a go tonight and see if my experiences were better :)

Oh. Hmm, never heard that. :)
