I'm 27 and as the title suggests, I'm looking forward to buy my first 'smartphone'.
My first phone was a Nokia 3310... Those were the days! Second phone was Nokia 3220 (bit girly though)... Third and also my last phone was Nokia N95 8GB that I bought brand new back in 2007 from my very first salary! I remember when I took it to my office for the first time! Everyone was like WOW... It was simply one of the most luxurious, classy and coolest phone back than. I find it a bit embarrassing now, but back then, I used to whip it out of my pocket pretending like I'm typing a text message whenever I find myself near some hottie just to build a cool impression! Late teens, eh! I'm laughing at myself now!
Too bad, it got stolen just recently. Well, life moves on...
Now, I'm torn between Android, iOS and WP10...
I like each of them for different reasons...
I like Android's versatility and enormous app collection, iOS's simplicity, WP10's tiles which I personally think are fantastic...
Whereas, I dislike Android for its complexity, lack of inconsistency between devices, the way it freeze, hangs and overheats all the time and also its power 'hogging' nature. I dislike Apple's money making strategies as you've to pay for almost everything. Windows? Well, its UI feels weird and awkward but thats about it...
Which OS would be best for a 'dumb-ish' guy who's coming from a Nokia Symbian?

Welcome to the forums. What are you looking for in a smartphone? Size, screen, removable battery or SD card?

There isn't a perfect phone. I had the 6p before and had hangs and freezes... To the point that I had to force a restart by pressing and holding the home and power button simultaneously for 10 seconds. This hasn't happened on my g4,s6,note 4, zenfone 2, and a number of other phones. Of course the other phones have had issues too... My point being that the iPhone isn't hang /freeze free either. Some people do experience problems.

With regards to power hogging... It will depend on the device and how you use it. My note 4 gets better battery life than the iPhone 6. But probably 10-20% less than the 6p. For the vast majority of people, the note 4 should make it through the day without problems.

Greetings and welcome to Android Central!

On them there "Smartphones," decisions, decision, decisions. Hope you find what you're looking for and enjoy the Android experience.

I've used both iOS and Android, but not Windows Phone OS, but to be honest with you just like you say all OS's have their goods and bads. Honestly iOS is simplicity at its core, the iPhone is a great phone and vast amount of accessories and gadgets that work with the iPhone just keep growing each year. But I think you get the best out of the iPhone if you own the rest of the Apple lineup, the iPad, Mac and Watch now. I think as of late Apple has added more features to iOS that include using Mac OS and as well as the iPad. Android if you can get past the OS update cycles and/or fragmentation is a good choice if you prefer more variety and options there is not just one phone to choose from and you can have different experiences with different phones. Android allows you to add more features to your phone that it doesn't come with which is the advantage of open source and not letting Apple control what you can do and not do with your phone as long as you stay with the Play Store you shouldn't have any problems, just read reviews, and do not install anything on your phone from untrusted websites. And Windows Phone is also gearing up with Windows 10 to have one single OS for everything phone, tablets, PCs, again with Windows phone you get different options and if you own an Xbox it could also be a good experience for you. You can't go wrong with either one of the OS's it is all going to depend on how you are going to plan on using your device. Android also allows for a lot of customization without having to root your device and with both iOS (change wallpaper is pretty much all you can do) and Windows Phone (change color of the tiles, resize them, and change wallpaper) you get very little wiggle room for any major changes to the way your looks.

Hello Sam and welcome to the forums at Android Central!

I agree with Golfdriver97, dpham00 and Sergio.

But definitely look hard on your needs from a phone.

In my case, I need a phone that takes great pictures and video besides other things.

I've used iOS and Windows phones before and iOS is boring to death in my opinion, I like WP better.

I still love WebOS but it's pretty much dead by now.
Android has been the OS of my choice (full time) since September 2011 and don't have any regrets.

Hi Sam and welcome to AC. As someone how changed phones 8 times last year I can attest no phone is perfect and honestly its really a balancing act when it comes to battery, storage, screen, processor, and most importantly the ability to customize.

I do like iOS but get bored with the iPhone every time I used one because the phone cannot be made to be unique beyond wallpapers unless you jailbreak and honestly that is getting harder and leaves you in a cat and mouse game.

I use to root and ROM my Android phones but Samsungs locked bootloaders made that a non-starter and now we have Moto leading the light touch charge and honestly if they offered a phone with 128GB I would seriously grab one, I like lots of storage even if I don't use it right away.

The key is Android will give you far more choices than any OS out there.

Which OS would be best for a 'dumb-ish' guy who's coming from a Nokia Symbian?

First of all, welcome!

Now, for your question...Take it from a guy who spent 15 years with Nokia, including painful ones on WP.
Android is your best option coming from Symbian. You'll find many familiar things and be amazed at the world of possibilities it gives you.
Yes, the lack of similarity between different vendors offers may leave you a bit lost, so I would advise you to first go to a store and try several brands to get a feel of how Android works in them. Then choose the experience you like the best and go with it.

Coming from Symbian, I think you'll be more familiar with either Sony phones or phones running stock Android (Motorolas, Nexus etc). LG, Samsung and HTC use a heavier hand on Android and you might feel a bit lost there. However, those brands also add a lot of extra features to the OS. Some are very useful..some are not.

But definitely go with Android.
WP may look nice and it is, and you'll be very pleased with it for a time. But WP doesn't have a future and you'll end up being frustrated by the lack of apps and support to the platform. You'll also find out that the OS can't do a lot of things that Symbian actually did.
