high pitched feedback sound during hangouts

My parents and I have two nexus 9s and whenever we do a video hangouts, we have a very loud echo and high pitched feedback sound (unless we keep the volume down to a minimum, which is difficult for my parents as they are getting old ). Is anyone else experiencing this problem? I don't recall having this issue when they had a nexus 10.
