The top end SoC's should be able to, but we also haven't seen how anything does with a resolution higher than 1280x800 yet. When the Transformer Prime Infinity launches we'll get a good idea of how they do.
This year's contender is LG with 440 ppi, but no device either...

Phones do it all the time. This isn't some insane resolution.
I don't know why you would need to know how >1280*720 works. 4" 1280x720 has a 367ppi, so I'm assuming that's the display res. Nothing insane on a new phone.
I would rather they make the jump to 1440*900 on a 5" phone. 1080p is ridiculous. The very very few people that will notice is far outweighed by the slower UI, increased battery drain, etc.
