Hole punch necessary in screen protector?

So I noticed as cases and screen protectors start to come on the market for the FE version, there are several screen protectors that have a hole punch or a notch for the camera on the front and others do not -- curious as to what you all think about the necessity to have a cutout or notch or a hole punch for the camera on the screen protector versus not having one. Thanks!

Don't know about the phones you mentioned, but don't some phones have autofocus for the front camera? If the sensors are in the hole, a layer of glass could interfere.

Personally I do not like the cutout. It is a dust collector. I don't really think another thin layer of glass over the lens is going to affect anything. We have been putting glass filters (including clear ones that basically act as lens protectors) on camera lenses for many years.

that's kind of what I was thinking I'm disappointed in the one I got which is super Shields because the tiny hole punch in the screen protector is collecting dust and tiny particles that I think may be more of a hindering Factor than another clean thin piece of glass as a screen protector would do

The glass can affect the camera if it's not designed for that purpose and so can the plastic film type as well as the adhesive. It can also affect the proximity sensor.

So because this phone has gorilla Glass 3 I really wanted to have a screen protector but at the same time I'm torn between the screen protectors that have the hole punch which seem to be collecting debris and dust which I currently have or getting a screen protector without the hole punch but I don't want it to affect the proximity sensor or front-facing camera.

I know first world problems!

You can try it but I wouldn't use them. I don't have any issues with dust collection.

I wouldn't use the type you were thinking of using without a cutout. I don't have a problem with dust on the ones with a cutout.

I keep reading about NOT having a hole on the screen protector for the proximity sensor...the problem here is that the proximity sensor IS NOT a part of the selfie camera...supposedly (according to the user manual) the proximity sensor is located to the left of the hole punch, somewhere under the screen??? Whether it is or not I do know this...it does NOT work like it should no matter where it is located. The accidental touch setting DOES NOTHING to stop the screen from turning on in my pocket! It is a major flaw/bug in the design of the S20 FE. I always pull my phone out of my pocket after walking a few steps and sure enough the screen is on and multiple taps are registering on the screen, and sometimes after allowing the screen to turn off on its own I can place my phone back in my pocket and it STAYS OFF like it's supposed to??? So it appears as if the accidental touch setting is just not engaging like it should right away as you place the phone in your pocket...but after a sort of pseudo proximity sensor refresh it starts to work. This does not work all the time but many times it does. I am hoping someone in the Samsung world is aware of this and working on a simple bug fix.

A previous chat with Samsung told me that this particular S20 model, the FE utilizes the selfie camera and software for the proximity sensor. I'm starting to question whether or not it's the truth, regardless I too am having issues with proximity with the screen coming on when the phone is up against my ear.

Most screen protectors aren't any harder than GG3 (or 4 or 5 - they're more scratch-resistant than 3, but no harder), so if you drop the phone, and the screen protector cracks, it takes the screen with it. A plastic protector at least gives you a little shock resistance. (But covering the camera with a piece of relatively thick plastic doesn't do much to make for good photography - and it may really mess up the proximity detection.)

I'm going to disagree with this . I have a Pixel3xl that has a Dome Glass screen protector on it . I had dropped it and the screen protector cracked but not the screen . When I dropped it it fell on it's face. Replaces the screen protector and I managed to drop the phone again a few months later . The second time I chipped the screen protector edge. No damage to the screen. I think a lot of it has to do with the quality of the glass screen protector you buy. Just my 2 cents.

A screen protector can save a screen from some drops on occasion. It certainly will protect it from scratching almost every time.
