Holiday sales update: Moto Z Play vs Moto X Pure Edition

Hello all,

Motorola has a sale:

Moto X Pure Edition = $289 (reg $399)
Moto Z Play = $299 (reg $449)

Now that it's been a couple of months for those with the Z Play, which one is a better buy until something new in 2017? Are they both getting 7.X?

Normal casual user, no heavy gaming.
Lots of web surfing and searching.
Lots of Hulu, Netflix, Youtube.

Also, do people use cardboard with their Motos?
