home and recent app buttons not working

after taking it to a shop (have this phone from on a network other than at&t, jailbroken) because it stopped charging. they had it for three days and claimed they couldn't do anything cause it kept frying ports they replaced and tried to sell me an external charger or a new phone. I took it to the shop at my provider back home (away at school until this point) and they just cleaned it out and charged it beyond 50% in under two hours. now the home and recent apps button won't work. maybe the incompetent con shop didn't connect the parts properly during reassembly? any idea? maybe how i can fix it or best course of action?

i just got an app for it but i'd love my buttons back

Welcome to Android Central! How about bringing it back to the second shop and asking them if they can figure out what's wrong with the buttons?

BTW, "jailbreak" only refers to iOS devices. Do you mean that the phone is rooted, or just carrier unlocked?

the second shop is my carrier shop and they don't have the parts if they need to replace them since they don't carry the phone. well, thats what they said when i asked them about it and they were closing within the hour so they couldn't tear it apart in that time. plus it's a trip into town for me

It sounds like you need to find a better repair shop. Try searching Yelp for one in your area, and look for one that has some expertise with Samsung products.
