hot spot question

Yes.... There are apps out there that allow you to do this but you will need to install the software onto your computer..

This is one of the main reasons I always root my phone. You can download wireless tether from the market, no software needed on your computer. Only works on rooted phone

Currently on this phone wireless tether works for free without any outside programs, rooting, or hacks. This will be fixed in the next software release as it is a bug. After that you would have to pay for hotspot. Or root/hack/defile your Nexus.

Stop spreading misinformation. It is NOT a bug, you work for Sprint or something? Google intended the hotspot feature to be native in GB and it is. T Mobile has not released a "fix" to shut theirs down for the Nexus and its been over 5 months now. This is a GOOGLE phone, Sprint has ZERO to do with any fixes or updates.

Edit:
Q: How much is the Mobile Hotspot capability?
A: Mobile Hotspot capability for Nexus S 4G is a $29.99 optional add-on. It allows the customer to use Nexus S as a Mobile Hotspot device capable of sending out a Wi-Fi signal to up to six Wi-Fi capable devices. This follows the new discounting rules launching in July and is not NVP discountable (e.g. SOCs $29.99 and below are not discountable; SOCs $30 and up are discountable).

This was not a typo.

So? T Mobile charges for their hotspot feature too but its been FREE on their Nexus S for over 5 months..

Wireless Internet Access - T-Mobile HotSpots

You expecting them to say its free and to come join in and use their network for free tethering? Of course they will list the charges. Those are for people with T Mobile and Sprint phones, not GOOGLE phones.

I'm going to be honest, I'm to scared to use the Wi-Fi hotspot.. Will Sprint charge me or what? I'm really confused here...

No you will not be charged as of right now. I know I'm a faceless dude in a forum but I promise feel free to use it until one day you get an error 67 saying your username cannot be validated.

Trust me, We ALL would love it to be free. But do you really think Sprint would not want to charge you for this if they could?
Do you have any evidence I am wrong other than T-mobile hasn't done anything with theirs?
Right now we are just two guys talking on a forum please don't call it misinformation unless you can prove I am wrong.

Feel free to say: "My opinion is I don't believe you but I guess we will see."

Edit: When you pay your bill each month do you make your check out to "GOOGLE"?

Google operating system:Sprint Phone

I've heard both sides of this argument and the way I figure it, everyone will get their bill next month and it will either be on there or not (I'm guessing not). I also figure that it may show up eventually, so as far as I'm concerned, you should not add it onto your plan, use MoHo, and then see what happens.

Come mid-June, there will be a lot of happy or unhappy people. I'm hope I'm one of the happy ones.

Smartest decision right now is to wait until the end of the month to see who actually had to pay.

As far as I know, at the moment, Sprint cannot accurately determine on there end what's happening to the data on the phone end (i.e. is it being digested by the phone or passed through to a tethered device). They can probably guess and make some assumptions based on processing power of the phone, connectivity, volume of data, etc, but I don't *think* they can accurately determine what happens to the data they funnel to your phone.

Now, that being said, if any of you would open up the contract copy they included in the box with the NS4g, you will see there that they specifically limit the data usage to the phone and only the phone. I don't have mine in front of me to quote word for word, but to paraphrase it as I recall, it said something to the effect of 'you can use the data for you phone and only your phone, not other device is authorized by us, doing so violates your contract, and we reserve the right to terminate the contract if we think you've done it.'

So can you? Yes. Does Sprint 'allow' it? Not without paying for the service. Is it violating your contract to tether without paying for it?" Yes. Can they catch you? Dunno...

My 'opinion' on this matter is this: Sprint would be required to notify you before charges are accrued from this sort of data usage, ie: the phone displays a warning about extra charges upon activating the tether much like the warning when selecting roaming...

I am curious to see how this plays out as I have heard that it is possible they are working with Google on this mattter but we all know how many rumours we hear about sprint and what they plan to do, alot of it never comes to pass or is thrown at us like a curve ball when we are expecting a fastball....remember the $10 add on for example?

Just my two cents...

So is it free or not? I have had a T-Mobile Nexus One for a year now, and have been using tethering/wifi hotspot for free (ran up to 10-15gigs on some months with NO overcharges and NO throttling). I am planning on getting a Nexus S, either T-Mobile or Sprint. If Sprint's Nexus S doesn't do this for free, I will be staying on T-Mobile. If Sprint Nexus S does it for free, then I'll probably switch.

PS: From what I have seen, most T-Mobile phones that run STOCK Android (2.2 and up) can tether/hotspot for free. I have personally tested this on my Nexus One, my T-Mobile Comet, and a friend's Nexus S. Don't know about the G2 or the G2x though.

Remeber what I said about this...Don't fret though root is ridiculously easy on this phone.

It is free but not for 4G speeds. If you want 4G speeds, then you would need to root. The nexus has free tethering out of the box. Root is not required! No application is needed. Do you really think sprint is going to tell you its free... Uhm No!!! I use it occasionally and i have been using it occasionally for 2 months and have yet to see a charge. I am not paying the $30 fee!
