Hotspot with the Infuse

When I was buying my Infuse at the AT&T store, the sales rep told me I could find apps to use on the phone to get it to be a hotspot without having to pay for the feature. I thought it was odd she mentioned that, but at the same time I got very curious. I seldom use tethering or hotspot. Has anyone been able to use the Infuse as a hotspot without adding that as a pay feature?

Wow, the things some of these employees say to make a sale. The higher-ups would fire them in a heartbeat for saying that. But yes it's true. If you're rooted then Wireless Tether for Root Users works great: https://market.android.com/details?id=android.tether AT&T has it blocked though, so to download it you'll need to put your phone in airplane mode and be on a WiFi connection, or at least that's what i found worked. If you're not rooted then i think PDAnet works well, but it's $16 for the full version, and only USB tethers afaik: PdaNet -- USB Tether/Bluetooth DUN for Android .

Easier way is to root, buy bloat freezer, freeze tethering manager and enjoy built in mobile ap. It's worked great for me so far.

Never knew this. Very cool. Is there a difference in how AT&T sees data usage doing it this way compared to a 3rd party app? Seems like if you do it by freezing tethering manager they'll find out pretty quick.

Thanks all for your replies. I'm still one of those AT&T customers with the unlimited data plan. Since I browse the web and use data on the phone, maybe tethering once in a blue moon would not raise any flags. I guess I need to read the sticky note in the forum and learn how to root my phone.

I hope they don't. I have seen this method recommended multiple times and have had no issues so far. I don't use a heavy amount of data when I tether either. I use it mainly for radar updates and light browsing while storm chasing. I will be sure to update if I hear anything from ATT.

Gingersnap method in sticky worked great for me. First time ever rooting as I'm new to android and it took less than 10 minutes start to finish.

Well, I rooted my Infuse last night. It took me under 10 minutes to do it. Since I use Macs, I used the link #5 in the sticky note. It worked like a charm. I then installed Wireless Tether and tested it with my iPad2. Again, no problems at all. Excellent directions from this forum! Thank you.

Hey if you just click here https://market.android.com/details?id=android.tether you can sign in and have it sent to your phone. that's what i did. worked fine on the first try, over my regular data connection.
