how bad is it to keep Skype running 24/7?

Skype is a battery hog and it's constant pinging will suck up some battery but probably not to the point where you're going to notice too much. I'd say if you get 20 hours out of your battery, leaving skype on 24/7(without any actual voice/video calls) will probably pull 2 hours off of that.
 
MrSmith's probably about spot on.

Any login session like that where it has to keep hitting the servers to look for incoming messages/calls and to keep you seen as online, is going to take a hefty toll. I only login Skype when I know I am about to make a call. And even in the short time I'm logged in on a video call, my battery drain is substantial.
