How can I connect my Kindle to my desktop?

Kindle uses

I want to use my Kindle 7 inch to connect to my Desktop, and by using the usb port draw on the Destop screen for toon animation, When I hooked it up I only get to use the storage functions not the apps...do I need a app to sync the devices, and if so what?
