How can I convince my phone to stay quiet? (Experia Z3 Compact, Android 5.0)

My new phone (I came from an iPhone 4S) doesn't (appear to) have a button to turn off sounds. I lowered the volume to silent (option appeared on the volume selector) under constant beeping but then later found that the phone happily playd the (loud) sound of a youtube video I accidentally ran into when I read a Web site.

Is there a way to silence the phone? I assume lowering the volume to nothing and selecting "silent" on the screen only affected maybe ring tones and such.

Thanks,
Andrew

There is no switch, you can do this one of two ways. Go under settings > sounds and notification and toggle media volume to the appropriate level.

Second option, wait for the media to start playing and toggle the volume rocker to the appropriate level.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

If you have Lollipop installed on your phone, have you tried switching to "Priority" mode to mute the phone?
