How can I fix my sticky volume buttons?

The other day I noticed something sticky on the back of my phone. I cleaned it off and then the next day I noticed by volume buttons didn't feel as clicky as they used to or as clicky as my lock button.

Me and my girlfriend tried scraping the muck out with a pin and managed to get some of it out. However the buttons are still sticky. It just doesn't feel like they're being pressed down at all.

I've heard to use rubbing alcohol, will this help clear the sticky stuff from the buttons or is there something else I should do?

With the battery out, it phone turned off.

Get a qtip and rubbing alcohol, and get it cleaned good around the buttons.

Wait around 30 min or so for the alcohol to evaporate. And see if it helps at all
