How can I get my G3 to connect to a cellular network?

G3 won't conect to cellular network

My wife's phone stopped working last weekend. I went through the T-mobile technical care people and their solution was to replace the phone. Unfortunately the phone has a small crack in the bottom bezel so they won't replace it unless I pay the $175 deductible. I am hands on enough to fix some parts of the phone (I've replaced the screen on my G3 twice) so I thought I'd give it a shot here.

Her phone will work on wifi, but if you turn wifi off or if she goes out of wifi range her phone stops working. When the t-mobile person tried to have me manually connect it to the network, it said unable to connect to the network, please try again. We did a soft and hard reset. They tried to refresh my network connectivity and none of these options worked. We moved the sim card into my phone and it worked just fine. So obviously there is a hardware issue going on. Can anyone point me to what might be the problem? My unknowledgable self thinks maybe some kind of antennae issue or something similar. Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to Android Central! You're probably right. Did you check the APN settings to make sure they're correct?

Yes, the technical service person had me reset the APN settings. When you say you think I'm right, you mean I should try to put a new antennae in and see if it works?

Also possibly, a problem with the SIM reader?

Oh sorry--yes, I meant that it's probably some kind of hardware issue like the antenna. You certainly could try replacing the antenna, but of course, there's no guarantee that will fix the problem.

Okay, so stupid me, I can't find a replacement antenna anywhere. I found one link that implied there is a speaker/antenna combo which I can buy for just $20, but every other search doesn't show me where the antenna physically is so I can make sure am getting the right part. Can anyone help me out?
