How can I get my Google Maps to type a different starting point location?

I have a Motorola razrm, I have been reading a lot about maps voice turn by turn navigation. It does work well..except that it only works from your current location. I can not get it to work when typing in a different starting point than my current location. All I get is the "preview".
Does anyone know of a work around for this?

Welcome to Android Central!

The navigation part works with the GPS and will always start with your current location when you start the "navigation" part.
