How can I get my icons and widgets on one screen?

Icons and widgets sizes

I just traded up my LG G2 for the turbo. So far so good, with a couple exceptions.

On the G2, I was able to place 5 icons on each screen going left to right and 5 going up and down. I could have widgets sized 5x5 for example. Looks like I'm stuck with 4x4! And that google search bar that I can't get rid of.

This makes no sense to me and its forcing me to use more homescreens than I prefer. Any ideas?
