Hi guys I have recently updated my HTC one m8 Google play edition to android lollipop and tried to move files to sdcard but every time I try with different file managers it fails.
I don't know why but lollipop was supposed to have this function .
Please help me if you can as I download lots and need to move them to my sdcard and can't always go on my computer .
Thank you very much .

well my problem happens to be the opposite. my sd card is completely fine and stable, but everytime i select a file from the sdcard and copy/move it to the phone's internal storage, the "root directory" popup shows. And as i click select, neither of the two choices (internal or sd) complete the operation. this recently happened on my Alcatel Flash 2, also non-rooted.

1) In ES, Select a file on internal storage and click the copy/move options
2) In ES, browse to (any folder) on sd card. I just used the root path for this too. For me it was: /storage/extSdCard
It will likely be different for other manufacturers (I think on a LG G3 I remember it being /storage/external_SD)
3) In ES, paste the file.

At this point you will get the screenshot in the above post about selecting the root of the SD card (I guess because this has never been standardized -- personally, I blame Google for the lack of standardization here since their approach to SD was to lock it down/try to avoid it rather than embracing and encouraging it. But that's another topic for another day)

4) Click Select on the ES popup
5) It will open another window (different app ?). I gave it a minute or 2 thinking it was loading something.
6) From here, I had to click on the "options" button (3 vertical dots in the upper right), then select to Show SD.
7) On same window, I then got options in the pane on the left sd. I don't recall the exact names but it showed some new items like "Internal" and "SD". I picked the SD one.

This USED to work for me. The last update took that capability out. I've read forums that say the Sandisk micro cards need to be reformatted to NTFS, with a bunch of mumbo jumbo about why, but reformatting to NTFS...doesn't work either. The phone then sees it as a blank card and forces you to reformat it via the phone, which automatically formats as FAT.

I've also read all the hype on why one should root, which is also all well and good, except you try and find an easy method of rooting a Samsung Galaxy S4 without the finances to replace it if you brick it an no guarantees that you won't. I've already managed to brick a cheap phone I tried this on and haven't found anyway to recover it. Can't take the chance on my Galaxy and all I want is to have the same features I had before AT&T messed with it. I have now shut off updates to my phone before they screw up anything else.

I get something similar, but the external SD card doesn't show in the selection, only the internal.

Any idea why?

The files on the ext SD are accessible and working fine, but i can't write or move anything new on it with ES.
I have another more basic app that came with the phone and it works fine with it, but the app as no lan capability, so i have to transfer the files from my computer to my internal sd with ES and then transfer them again with the other "my file" app from internal to external.
It's quite a pain with big files like movies....

Does your device accept the current file system? I think mine is NTFS (not 100% sure).

i tried to format ntfs and put it back in, but the phone doesn't recognise it and then format it back to exFAT

After some more tests, all works great with my daugter's sandisk 32g SD card, but when i put back my 64g, it gives me the same trouble again.
By the way the phone is alcatel onetouch and it's supposed to get up to 128g SD card fine

Could it be that the SD card's speed class is not supported by the phone?

Have you tried manually mounting the SD card (Settings > Storage > Mount)?

Just to let people know, this is what worked for me, I was selecting the "CD_ROM" (usb) but with no luck (in ES Explorer, and then the popup thing).

I went to settings > storage > and saw that it was mounted, I unmounted and re mounted, went back to ES Explorer > USB and tried to create a new folder, got the popup, selected the root folder on "CD_ROM" (usb), came back and the new folder was created, tried copy & paste and it worked.

I hope this helps others.

So, here's something fairly disturbing.

I just got a brand new LG Tribute 5. Uses Lollipop for the OS. Literally out of the box yesterday. Doesn't allow writing to the (also brand new) SD card even with the default file manager. Tried the ES way described earlier with no luck. Tried unmounting and mounting, nothing. So I figure, "screw it" and go to a library computer to move my files. (I don't have a computer, for reasons.)

Guess what i still can't do!!

I tried to copy my text files first. Small in size, just some stories I like. It got maybe half a bar full on the transfer and stopped dead. I have no idea why.

Update: So i had to erase the sd card from the settings screen for it to allow me to transfer the files. That is really really stupid. Now i have to go back to my tablet and retransfer all my files again. Stupid.

No I am not a rooted user . but I have rooted before on sense for converting to gpe, I actually don't like rooting my phones because It makes them unstable

First off, developers of ES should check if a user is rooted if such is required, when you install their app. Secondly, I experienced the same problem and when you go to try to select the root, there's no information provided stating it failed. Further, what would be accomplished by simply selecting the root folder? Nothing, and therefore the help is not only useless, it's as well invalid.
....
I'm a seasoned developer and don't advocate making excuses for poor programming, doing such implicitly advocated such and further, it makes those who are confused by poor programming feel as though they missed something or aren't capable of understanding technical issues. I'd be way more productive and helpful to preempt an answer with the fact that it is a programmer error, they didn't account for one not having a rooted phone and thus their program becomes confusing upon trying to move files. If it were my application or developed by my company, I'd then see to it and fix the error.
.
Mystifying/misguiding a user IS an error and even worse an error than is a logical one, for who is this program being written for? Logical errors get fixed ASAP, misguiding the user makes the software useless!
