How can I receive a text message notification while being on a phone call

I have a brand new Moto X 2nd Gen, running Lollipop, and I am not too familiar with 'Interruptions' and how they work and whether that is how I can make it so when I'm on a phone call, I can still receive text message notifications so that I don't miss a text because I'm on the phone -- any suggestions, or is it more of a setting I'll have to make in a texting app?

They ought to come through. Go to Settings>Sound & Notification>App Notifications, and see if the Messaging is set to be blocked. Also make sure you're not on Priority Interruptions Only (you'd see a star in the status bar) or No Interruptions (you'd see a circle with a line through it in the status bar).

I went to check and when I was trying to figure this out yesterday, I set the messaging app to 'priority' even though it was set to nothing originally... so it isn't set to 'block' that's for sure...but I am not sure about my 'Priority Interruptions' settings... when I go to settings>sound & notification>interruptions I have it set to 'always interrupt' and 'events and reminders', 'calls', and 'messages' are clicked on.... is that incorrect? should I have them marked off, so that they are just regular interruptions, not 'Priority Interruptions'? I think I had this set before changing my messaging app to be 'priority', so maybe the settings in here are what is wrong?

Always Interrupt should override any priority setting. Nothing is coming through with that setting?

Nope it still does not work...and I tested it extensively...what am I doing wrong? It's just not making any audible warning for texts when I'm on the phone!

I'm not sure what else to try. What happens if you turn off the Priority setting for Messaging, but keep the general setting to Always Interrupt?

That is one of the things I tried -- didn't help... would calling Motorola customer service be an option? Does it matter what cell phone provider I have, or can I just call them? I know calling Verizon would be less than helpful, probably more frustrating, so don't really want to go that route...
