Samsung s3 randomly shuts down

My samsung galaxy s3 has started to turn itself off randomly every few hours. Usually overnight and usually during the day after a few hours of sitting idle.

I have googled a fix but many are pointing to the battery (I have a new battery that has worked flawlessly for the past 2 months prior to this switch off problem, which has started occurring this fortnight)

I tried the old battery too, to be sure it wasn't the battery. Incidentally, when it randomly turns off it sometimes drains the battery from 100% to 30% or 20% or 5% and other times the battery is not effected (still at say 95%). weird.

I decided to do a FULL reset using the - "hold power button, home button and up on volume" I went for a "wipe cache partition" then I also tried a "reboot system" and finally a "wipe data/factory reset". The phone was wiped clean and I started from scratch. The 'turn off' problem still persisted.

I also saw many posts saying it is a faulty power button. I doubt this is the case because it happens sitting flat on a table with noone touching it.

At this point I want to throw it at a wall !! I would love to hear from anyone who has fixed this problem. thanks

Interesting update: I had a theory that if I continuously ran an app it may stop the phone shutting down. So I ran triple j radio all yesterday and last night and the phone did not shut off. Clearly it is a software problem...... not sure what to do next?

anyone??

I just had this happen to my Samsung Galaxy S4 overnight. I'm wondering if it was the Samsung Software Update that seems to have downloaded. I haven't installed it (Lollipop) yet, but it looks like a huge file and needs a lot of memory. Possible that your phone installed it and didn't really have enough room for it?

no it didn't update a large file. thanks for the idea though.

I have since flashed my s3 with cyanogenmod 11 (and android 4.4.4) to see if that would make a difference. It has not. phone still shutting down randomly , if left idle for an hour or two.? frustrating!

Re: Samsung s3 randomly shuts down

It's a CPU problem when y use to much of it it will shut down to attempt to cool the CPU and prevent breakage nothing u can do but update firmware as Samsung fixed it although it still happens
