I connect to my employer's Exchange server which requires Encryption and when I set up the Outlook app on my S6 I thought it asked me if I wanted to encrypt my phone now or wait until later. I thought I chose later but I have not been reminded.

Thanks for any comments.

Default is not encryted. If you turn it on you will know as the process to convert takes a while.

Settings.lock screen and security.other security settings.encrypt device.

What precisely is the benefit of encryption? If I use a fingerprint lock, I can't see my device's storage/data (while it's in a locked state) from a USB connection until I unlock it. So what does the encryption buy me? Thanks.

Thank you for sharing the link. However, after reading that article, I'm still not 100% clear on what it provides me beyond the fingerprint screen lock.

Basically it is safe from hacking to the level of police etc. Although I think they can compel you to unlock it with your fingerprint but not compel you to enter a PIN? Something like that. Also if and when you sell the device etc, your data cannot be retrieved by any means to the new owner.

The Nexus 6 comes encrypted by default and there is a slight performance hit to enabling it. I am not going to enable on my S6.

Go to settings and under search type encryption. You will see an option and once you pick it you'll know because it will say to encrypt or decrypt your device. I was just playing around with trying to get my work email to sync on my device using 3rd party mail clients earlier today.

Here in Florida, they are passing a law for you to make your phone accessible to law enforcement during a stop without a warrant. In fact that might be nationwide. Now granted, it's not in effect yet but it's coming.

Interesting. Not that I am have anything to hide from the police but I am sure that will be challenged legally.

Agreed and hope it is challenged. Not to get political but I'm a firm believer that without a warrant your phone should be off limits.

I agree. Their main reason (WESH 2 local news and NBC Nightly News) was so that the police could, on the fly, figure if you were texting during any type of accident making the process faster and/or texting in general when pulled over for a traffic violation.

Thanks!
