where do I get this custom OS and is it safe for the phone. I paid $300 for the phone can't afford to waste my money.

If the phone is locked, you already wasted your money. You have a stolen phone that no carrier will allow on its towers. (You're also guilty of receiving stolen property.) The "lock" is an entry in the cellphone industry's "locked phones" database, so the only way to "get around it" is to break more laws.

Get the seller and threaten legal action if you don't get a refund - at least. (I'd just turn the matter over to your county or city or district attorney - whoever prosecutes crimes, as an injured innocent party - and let them put the seller behind bars for a few years. Then I'd sue the seller for a refund plus money for my time and effort - and if I had to hire an attorney to collect, I'd hire the most expensive one I could find and add his fee to the suit. The more it hurts to steal a phone, the fewer people will steal phones. Right now, it doesn't hurt - it pays. The seller has your $300 and no pain.)

Don't worry you can unlock it and use it again. you have to install a custom OS system. Buddy bought one from someone that was the same way. I had it unlocked in about 2 hours......
Just don't post your buddy's name, because you just accused him of committing a few federal felonies. They could even prosecute you as an accessory after the fact. You might not be convicted, but your wallet would be a lot thinner.

well no disrespect intended ...
People need to beaware buying phones because if it was owned by rent a center and the person did not pay the bill

PHONE IS NO GOOD

If you take it to a RAC, seeing as how the phone belongs to them, do not expect them to return it to you. Also, because the phone was probably stolen from a RAC customer in the first place, stand by for the arrival of a police unit.

Contact eBay now!

I currently work for Rent a center and we have a buy back program for people with stolen phones. No we do not get law enforcement involved because it wasn't the buyers falt.

First of all, it isn't a stolen phone. The contract wasn't completed by the purchaser so RAC locked the phone. RAC has always installed their own software onto electronics like computers and phones. Normally, RAC purchases T-Mobile phones and installs their own custom rom. You can get around this. You simply put the phone into download mode and flash the original firmware which can be gotten from sammobile (you flash it with odin). Then you have a unlocked t-mobile S5. There is absolutely nothing illegal about reinstalling the original firmware to a phone. What was illegal however was when RAC was installing software on computer they use to rent out. It would give them access to the customers person files, pictures, passwords etc..

Rent A Center will buy back all locked phones, The price is set according to the model you have. You do not have to sell it but it will be forever locked. You would have to change the imei to make it work. Get Your Money Back From Ebay.

If you are knowingly in possession of stolen merchandise then you need to report it to the police. You can try to recuperate your losses from the seller. Knowingly being in possession of stolen merchandise is a misdemeanor and can be up to one year in jail
