How can I use S-Voice to read incoming messages on my Galaxy s4?

When I ask it to read my messages, it responds with "You have X messages from X contacts. Which one would you like me to read?"

It does not however give me a list of contacts to read from and I can't use a simple "read all" command, nor does it recognize any names that I try to use. Is there a workaround command for this?
