How do Contacts work?

I have a new Moto X Pure Edition and I set it up with my GMAIL account as well as Mighty Text. I expected it all to be pretty when it sync'd with my GMAIL contacts. To my surprise, I got tons of contacts from GMAIL, (all contacts, not just my contacts). When I go into the CONTACTS app on my phone and customize the view to show only MY CONTACTS, that works great on that app but when I go back into the phone all the contacts are still there.

Is there a central place for Android users to really learn how and when contacts are sync'd? Right now I have fixed the CONTACTS in gmail but Mighty Text contacts are screwed up and I want to see only MY CONTACTS on my phone app.

This is an issue where pure Lollipop is behaving strangely. I logged on to LinkedIn, Waze, and a few more apps and got ten versions of everything. Selection of what to show was completely non obvious...
