how do i backup my Samsung S4 to my computer without using the broken screen?

Is it a matter where the screen is dead and there's nothing displayed at all, or something like the display is just partially visible and/or distorted? Also, how was the screen damaged? If you power your S4 off and start it up again, can you hear it make its usual startup sounds? Trying to determine the extent of the damage, was it just the display or did that also involve other internal components.
