How do I change the default apps at the bottom of the screen?

The 4 or 5 default apps at the bottom of the screen (in the place the manual calls the dock) cannot be held down and moved, how can i remove them and put my own choice of apps there?

Some launchers handle them as any other shortcut - long-press and move. Ithers don't let you move them, so you need to install another launcher. (I always use Nova Launcher, regardless of what the phone comes with.)
