How do I check voicemail on Galaxy Alpha?

I have a Galaxy Alpha and a Samsung Gear S that are connected via bluetooth. When I get a voicemail, I get a notification on my Gear watch, but not on the Alpha. I can check the voicemail using the Gear, but if I try to check using the Alpha, I just get a message saying that I don't have any voicemails. The voicemails that show up on the Gear are to my primary number for the phone, not the other number the Gear has for when it is not in bluetooth range. The Alpha has Visual Voicemail, not the old regular voicemail. Any ideas how to correct these issues?

I'm not sure how to respond to answers given here, so I'm editing the question to include this:
I've tried pressing and holding "1" to open voicemail, but it goes to visual voicemail and says there are no messages. I know there are messages there because I called my phone from another number and left a test message. It shows and plays on the Gear, but not on the Alpha. Could it be something to do with the two being linked?

OK, figured out the problem. Seems I had inadvertently set my Alpha to call forward to my Gear, so all calls went to the Gear's voicemail. I went into call settings, additional settings, and changed the call forwarding number to my voicemail number instead of my Gear number. I can still answer incoming calls on either device, but calls to my Alpha now go to its voicemail. and calls to my Gear's number go to its voicemail. I'm not sure if the call forwarding was automatically set when I linked the two devices or if I did it while playing with the settings, but the issue is resolved. Thanks.
