How do I deactivate my touch screen during a call?

When my phone touches my ear during a call all sorts of things are on my screen and sometimes it will hang up or go mute during conversation

What phone and android version do you have? Are you using the stock dialer or a different one? In most phones the option to switch the screen off while on a call is enabled by default.
