How do I disable HTC sync and use Android File Transfer instead?

I don't care for HTC Sync and I want to use AFT instead. I have it disabled on the phone but AFT still doesn't pop up when I plug in my phone.
What am I missing.

Try enabling USB debugging on your device and see if that helps with the issue.
