How do I download photos shared with me on google photos to my device - Moto X4 Andorid?

So a friend shared a few photos via google photos. She has an iPhone, I have an android. I attempted to download the photos to my device. Some of the photos downloaded successfully, and some failed to download (or failed to load within the downloads folder on my Moto X4). It's very hit or miss. I can't find the reason for why this is happening. The photos that download fine can be uploaded into instagram/fb. But the photos that don't show up in the downloads folder properly, obviously can't load into instagram/fb. The photos that don't download properly just appear as a grey thumbnail with a spinning wheel. It seems most of the photos are .heic not .jpeg. All the photos were taken with a new iPhone if that matters.
