Hi -
Droid 4, Android version 4.1.2 here.
Backlight problems - Hard keys' backlight don't turn on anymore. Same with the soft key's backlight (i.e., the icons on the bottom of the phone for "Home", "SpyGlass/Search", "Return/Back", etc.). They all used to turn on when the light was dim.
The only way I can get the backlights to come on is to turn on the Flashlight app I downloaded. Then both the hard keys backlight turn on, and also the "soft" ones come on. Unfortunately, as soon as I leave the app (hitting "Return" or "Home") these backlights go back off.
I tried to test the sensor:
1) The "Hold it to your ear while talking on the phone" test - the display used to go to black when I did that ... no longer.
2) The "Block the light sensor with your finger and see if the backlights come on" test (on the screen-side of the phone, just to the right of the "A" in "MOTOROLA", and just to the left of the front camera) - even in total blackness, with the screen brightness turned as low as possible, the backlights don't come on.
3) The "Hold it to a bright light to see if the backlight comes on" test (weird-sounding, I know, I've looked through lots of forum posts, and it sounds like at least a few years ago that worked because of screwy programming with an update) ... nope, the backlights stay off.
All this is with various combinations of turning screen brightness automatic "ON/OFF", blowing into the microphone to get rid of dust, and other stuff I found on old posts.
Should also say: I powered down and up, and even in "Safe" mode ... same results, the backlights don't go on in dim light or in complete darkness, or at any time except when the "Flashlight" app is on.
Thinking I might have to "root" (gulp), I looked around and couldn't find something that controlled the backlighting on a Droid 4, so it looks like I won't have to go down that road.
Since the lights come on when the Flashlight app is on, I know that it probably isn't completely hopeless. But I don't know how to have the backlights come on when the light is dim. I'd even live with having them on all the time the phone is on, even with the battery hit, as I can work with the phone charged pretty much most of the time.
Is there anything I can do to force the backlights on (even if it's a broken sensor issue)?
Thanks -
