How do I get my screen to respond properly?

I was using my phone normally, when it suddenly just stopped registering any touch. It will pick up a swipe here or there rarely, but the screen is unresponsive other than that.
I tried a soft reset: nothing. I tried the volume up, power, menu button combo to reboot: nothing. I even tried letting it die completely, when i turned it back on i still wouldn't register any touch.

Perhaps it needs attention from a repairer.
