How do I get the alphabet index back on my contacts list instead of the dots?

I am new to the forum so forgive any missing info. I have a Samsung Galaxy note 10 plus on the AT&T network and after the last android 12 update I no longer able to find my contacts by tapping on the alphabet on the right scrolling index because it has been replaced with useless dots and it takes me forever to scroll and find the correct contact.

Welcome to Android Central! What happens if you drag your finger on that column of dots -- do you see the letters appear then?

I have Android 12 on my Note 10 plus and I had the same complaint until I started scrolling the dots and the letters appeared as I moved bar.

Ok so what is the problem? The letters are there, they just don't show until you start dragging the column of dots. You just have to learn a new way to scroll through your contacts. There are always new things in each version of Android - this is just one of them.

It sounds like Super Dave426 doesn't have a problem -- we'll have to wait to see if the OP @Spring L Ashmore follows up.

@Super Dave426 I didn't know that the letters would show up when I scrolled because I used to just click on the letter (or three letter group) where I needed to be. Now I click on the dots hoping to get close to where I need to be. It's faster to just click where I'm going than to guess close and scroll. I suppose, like everything, if things work, someone will come along and ruin it.

Super glad I thought to google this today and found this site. Thanks. Now a registered member. That missing alphabet was driving me crazy.

Welcome to Android Central, and I'm glad this helped!

The problem is that you have to start the scrolling to get the dots to show up in order to guess at where to touch. It worked just fine prior to this update. This is a simple case of changing something just for the sake of changing it. For some reason they can't just leave things alone.

I actually was not aware of the letters showing if you scrolled on the dots. It was driving me crazy because I would try to make a guess where to select the dot and hoping it would bring me close to the letter I wanted. But actually it appears to be a bit easier. I scroll on the dots and stop scrolling when the letter I want shows up. Before, the letters along the side were so small that I always selected the wrong letter.

im the same, why scroll down to the letter you are after when previously with the alphbet down the side you could just go straight to the letter you are looking for, as now, its a guess where to start scrolling, definitley made it harder to find a contact

so, is it possible to add the alphabet back to the side bar as before ?

Welcome to Android Central! I'm not aware of a way to bring that back. Send feedback from within the Contacts app about it. If enough people give the same feedback, maybe Samsung (or Google) will bring it back.
