Auto underlining text in messages to change to emoticon

A friend of mine is on the Verizon network, and I am on nTelos. When he types in his text messages, it will automatically underline words he has typed and give you an option to use a corresponding emoticon for that word. Is this a setting? Is it only a Verizon option? I cannot find a way to do this with my Samsung Galaxy S5. Please help...

He probably has another keyboard installed. I know SwiftKey does suggest emoticons when you type in certain words. And it's free, so no harm to try :)

No, I can confirm that I have that feature on my Verizon s5 as well, but my wife's Sprint s5 does not. We're both using factory keyboards. It's pretty convenient and driving her nuts that I can't turn hers on.

Well, the Samsung Keyboard is based off SwiftKey, but carriers might turn some features off... I'd imagine the only setting that would help in this case is the Autocorrect feature.
