How do I make my contacts visible

I've recently upgraded to the Moto G2, but all of my contacts are invisible by default which means they won't sync with Whatsapp. How do I make my contacts visible. Ideally I'd like to make a selection of contacts visible rather that allowing all invisible contacts to be seen by Whatsapp.
