How do I restore deleted Android files through Fonepaw?

I'm trying to restore deleted files, or at least see if they can be restored. FonePaw seems like the best way to do so. I downloaded and followed the steps. Once I debug my android, it tells me
"Failed to connect the device, click "Retry" to reconnect it"
Is there a way to make this work?

It could be a few different things. Your settings might be set to charge only instead of file transfer when plugged into another device. There should be a notification on your phone after plugging it in where you can change that setting. It could also be that you need to download the proper drivers on your computer. But you will have to Google how to install adb/USB drivers because it would be too much to walk you through it.
