How do I return to Maps Navigation after ending a phone call while driving?

While driving, using Google Maps for navigation, if I receive a phone call, the display goes to the "dialer" screen. I'll maximize the maps again to get back to driving while on a call.

Worse, though, when I end the call, the phone goes back to the lock screen, not back to Maps / Navigation. How can I change this? I hate needing to pull the maps back up after ending a call in the car.

I've got a Pixel 2 running 8.0 stock.

Welcome to Android Central! Have you considered using Android Auto on the phone? It's an excellent interface to use while driving, and solves that problem. It also helps prevent you from getting too distracted by your phone, since you can only access maps, phone, and music (and also voice commands for Google).

If you don't want to use Android Auto, then you'd probably have to change your Automatically Lock interval to something really long (like 30 minutes). That way, the phone won't lock unless 30 minutes have passed since the screen went to sleep while you were on your call.
