How do I Set a chat ringtone for a specific contact?

I was able to set a specific sound for individual contacts so I could recognize who set me a chat. I have a Galaxy S8+. For some reason, about a week ago I stopped getting audible notifications for the contacts for which I had set up a specific sound (selected from the standard available notifications). I went to contacts, edit, and tried to add any notification back for when I received chats from those contacts, but there is no longer a choice for assigning a sound for text messages. Only ringtone and vibrate for calls. So I still do not get audible notification from those contacts when I receive messages. How do I fix this?
