Question How to change notification sound on specific app

I have Samsung A53 running Android 14 and OneUI 6.1. I also recently "upgraded" Google messages.
In the past, I was able to select a specific, unique sound for a specific app. I cannot find how to do that anymore.
I think that feature has gone away? Or it is buried where I can't find it.
For example, my messages notification was "knock, knock" while email notifications was something else.
How do I assign a specific, unique sound to a specific app?
Thanks!

Should be in the same place as before (with a little different sub-options, however). Just long-press the app you want to customize, select App Info, and select Notifications.

Here's where it may be different. I think the latest/greatest update has opted to 'group' all notification categories per app, but you can always disable this and go back to 'individual' categories (i.e. specific contacts, group chats, system messages, etc.). In there you should be able to individually modify how you want to receive said notification type, including custom sounds.

SpookDroid Thanks for your reply. I have been to "AppInfo" numerous times and opened every option. Nothing allows me to select a specific sound for the app. I can turn sound on or off. I can turn notifications on or off. But nothing about selecting a specific sound.

Welcome to AC!
Also now on newer one UI Samsung has toggled off notifications categories so to enable go to settings>notifications>advanced settings>toggle notifications categories on them follow Spooks suggestion

Under app info tap notifications, then notifications categories

All, Thanks! But no cigar...yet!
I went to settings and turned on "categories" Thank you!
Then I went to AppInfo and chose Notifications. Thank you!
When I chose "Notification Categories" I only see 4 options that are all on or off options. Nothing that lets me select a specific sound.
I am primarily trying to change the sound in Google Messages.
Very frustrating!

OK, did some more investigation.
I followed all the suggestions.
I went to app info for app Marco Polo. No option to configure in the app.
I went to app Whatsapp. It had an option to configure in the app. There I was able to select a specific notifiocation sound.. Just what I was looking for.
When I follow those steps for Messaes app, there is no option to select a sound.
So, it seems that ability is on a app by app basis. Whatsapp allows me to select a sound, but not Messages or MarcoPolo.

I just checked on my Pixel...The Messages app follows the default sound you select under Settings. You can assign different tones for different people, though.

The in-app settings yes, are per app. But the general notification settings SHOULD be there (unless you're using something like the Simple OneUI version which may limit options). Let's try this the 'long route'...

Open your phone's Settings and go to the Notifications category. Now tap on App Notifications and find the app you want to customize (tap the app name, NOT the toggle). This should give you a menu with a toggle to turn all notifications for that app on/off, Sound/Vibration for the alerts, and how you want the notification to show up. Now, in that screen, scroll down to where you should see Notification categories.

This is the one you want to customize. Besides turning categories on/off with the toggles, you can further customize each alert. For instance, if you go to Messages and do this, one of the categories is Incoming Messages. If you tap that (again, tap the group name, NOT the toggle!), it takes you to a screen where you can select the specific sound for it, vibration, lock screen behavior, etc.

Yes some apps don't allow, but for message app once you tap notifications categories there are few menus to tap should be one for incoming messages and adjust
