How do I set a ringtone for my contacts?

After recent Oreo update to my S8 I can no longer assign personalized text tones to Contacts. Don’t understand why this very popular option disappeared.

Tried many other Contact apps to no avail.

Love this feature. Please fix.

Is it possible to go back to Nougat?

Not easily. To be clear, this may not be an Oreo "fault" but a fault of the Samsung implementation. Samsung usually provides its own Contacts or People app which had that functionality, or it was a feature of the Samsung texting app.

One alternative is to use an alternate text app that would support that capability. I know with Hangouts (not an option but using it as an example because I know it) I can assign a ringtone to a specific conversation.

For me it's in the Contacts app, I select the contact, then click on the Edit pencil, THEN click on More, and THEN Ringtone. :)

That's a really good question! Let me do some testing (I have 2 phones)

Ok based on my testing it just applied to calls. I was only able to globally change my messenger sound, NOT for each contact.

The confusion is that the title of this thread is currently "How do I set a ringtone for my contacts?" but the actual question is about customizing the alert/notification (not call ringtone) for SMS/MMS messaging.

Do any messaging apps besides Hangouts allow for a per-conversation message tone adjustment? This has each "conversation" bypassing the global sound setting and using the one selected for it.

Android Messages has that.

They all should.

Textra and android messages do. From what samsung support told me, it was intentionally removed. They felt it was an old and unneeded feature.

WhatsApp has individualized notification sounds per contact. You can also search within a conversation thread. I use it so much more often than SMS.
