It is my understanding that android devices are configued (by default) so that the internal microphone is used whenever recording video. How can I change the settings on my S4 so that an externnal microphone will be used when recording video? Specifically, what exact change needs to be made to the settings? Thanks.

The first question: Does your S4 have a way to even attach an external microphone?

Buy a mic that plugs into the headphone jack. Works just fine for my S7.

I think so as long as I have the appropriate Y adapter cable which I have on order. The thing is that (at this point) even if I had the adapter cable, I wouldn't be able to test it until I determine how to reconfigure the phone so that it takes audio from a plugged-in external microphone when shooting video. It's supposed to be possible to configure the phone to do this (see: https://help.newkajabi.com/hc/en-us...with-your-Android-Phone-using-an-External-Mic), I just don't know how to do it.

I think that it does provided that it is the right microphone with the right (properly wired) connector.

When you say that it works just fine for your S7, are you talking about using the microphone as an audio input device for recording videos? It's important. Apparently the default setup is OK for using a microphone for all purposes other than video recording. For video recording it appears that the default setup has to be tweeked. That's what I'm trying to learn how to do.

Yeah, just plug in a mic and start recording your video. I'm not familiar with where you're saying the default setup is OK for using a microphone for all purposes other than video recording. I've recorded several videos with a mic as seen in this example: https://youtu.be/myGAFqZORQw

Technically, once you plug into the headphone jack, that should disconnect internal microphones and use the ones you plugged in... Hence it should be doable. As demonstrated by the gent above :-)
